Welcome to Transylvania

The land of Saxon villages.
The landscape that pushes up against the southern bend of the Carpathian mountains is home to about 230 Saxon villages. Dominated by fortified churches, the villages form some of the last medieval landscapes in Europe. They were founded in the 12th century by German Saxons invited by Hungarian nobles to safeguard strategic areas of Transylvania and typically comprise a single long street, lined by houses with hipped roofs and huge wooden doors and flanked by stone dwellings. With low-impact tourism in mind, some houses have been restored by the Mihai Eminescu Trust and make for a fascinating stay.

The Mihai Eminescu Trust is a UK registered charity dedicated to the conservation and regeneration of villages and communes in Transylvania. Unless otherwise indicated, all of the guesthouses listed on this site are owned by the MET. Any profit returns to the villages for a continuation of the MET's Whole Village Project restoration programme. For more information about the MET please visit their website: www.mihaieminescutrust.org

Thank you for your interest in MET Houses. On our website are some more details on each of the houses available to let and the appropriate prices.
